• • One of two aquatic plants of cultural significance, the other being the <xtaga be'ñe>. Both plants produce a white flower. The aquatic herb <xtaga be'ñe> (<Nymphaea ampla>) has circular leaves with toothed edges that float on the surface of the water. Its roots are submerged and develop in the riverbed. It flowers during the day and gives off a modest aroma. The <mudubina> (Nymphaea conardii>), on the other hand, has elliptical leaves with mostly smooth edges. It flowers at night and gives off a pleasant, much stronger aroma. Legend has it that these plants used to grow in the ground rather than in water. Then, one day, the <xtaga be'ñe> saw the <mudubina> and fell in love with her, but his love was unrequited. When the <mudubina> finally fell for the <xtaga be'ñe>, he was dying. Upon seeing that her love was dying, the <mudubina> began to cry, and she cried so much that a lake began to form around her. From that moment on, both became aquatic plants. The two plants continued to live near each other, but they can never see each other because one flowers during the day and the other flowers at night.

Al ver <mudubina> que <xtaga be'ñe> moría, comenzó a llorar y tanto lloró, que creó una laguna a su alrededor. De ahí que se hicieron acuáticas estas dos plantas. Las dos plantas viven cerca una de otra pero tienen la desgracia de que no se pueden ver entre ellas pues una florece de día y otra florece de noche. [Spanish]
