general term for ‘carahuascas’, a class of trees that grow in a variety of habitats, including low-lying areas that inundate during the wet season, deep forest areas, and old gardens. They form a class by virtue of the fact that their bark can easily be peeled off in strips and used as tumplines (<tuuku>). They grow to a maximum diameter of 20-40cm, with the trunks of some species in this class used as roof poles
