xcuaana' bi'cu' yu'ba' This name is used to refer to at least three species of three different families. The first is <Castela erecta> of the Simaroubaceae family, an abundant, thorny shrub with hard leaves, orange flowers and red fruit. The second is a tree of the genus <Randia> of the Rubiaceae family. It reaches a height of 3 meters and produces a red fruit. The third is a species of the genus <Croton> of the Euphorbiaceae family. This is a shrub or robust herb that reaches a height of 60 centimeters. Its leaves have small glands at the base. It has green or yellow flowers, green fruit, and a transparent exudate. Those familiar with these plants note that dogs often urinate at the foot of them. Some say that dogs eat the fruit, perhaps seeking some medical benefit. However, in his <Guía Gráfico-Fonémica para la Escritura y Lectura del Zapoteco>, Eustaquio Jiménez Girón says that the fruit is poisonous to dogs. It is also reported that in the past, when the flora of La Ventosa was more robust, the cactus known as <bidxi dxiña> (or <biznaga> in Spanish, genus <Mammillaria>) was often found at the foot of these plants.
