yaga bichiisa Name for the species <Beaucarnea sanctomariana>, known in Spanish as <la pata de elefante> or 'elephant foot'. It is an arborescent plant that reaches a height of 5 meters. It has a very thick stem which can be over a meter wide at its base but narrows towards the top. A cluster of ribbon-like leaves sits atop the trunk. It has thick bark, and both the flower and the fruit are white or cream-colored. It flowers in June and July during the rainy season. It is a plant of cultural significance because its long, thin leaves are used to make ornaments for All Saints Day and novenas. The leaves are cut and woven together to make a crown or, along with the leaves of the <guie' bandaga bata>, a white star with a green center. The ornaments are hung on a wall, covering it completely. Because of its cultural significance and its popularity as a decorative houseplant, this plant is commonly removed from its natural habitat in the hills. The plant is listed as an endangered species, and could become extinct in the short or medium term if its habitat and/or reproductive cycle are altered. It grows very slowly and may require the presence of other plants nearby for effective reproduction, so extraction affects its growth as well as its ability to reproduce. Therefore, the removal of <yaga bichiisa> from the hills where it grows naturally is against Mexican and international law. The survival of this plant will depend upon community awareness and the development of sustainable propagation and reproduction practices.
